Personality: most hero's of the story want to be the hero because it gets recognition. It gets them famous. Zack, may be like that at times, but mostly he wants to be good and be a hero to be a hero. He wants to help people, he wants to save the world and rid it of all evil. And though those are his intentions, he may or may not tend to make hasty decision when he should come up with a plan first.
Zack is protective of not just the people he loves and is close to, but everyone around him. He acts like he's the best friend of someone he just met, not because he is fake, but because he is just that friendly. He doesn't really like keeping secrets and is pretty open with his opinions of others, of their actions, or of just the general circumstances around them.
History: Born in Gongaga, the only thing that led the boy to put one foot in front of the other was his dream of working for SOLDIER, a division of Shinra that fought the badguys. He loved the entire deal that came with being a recognized hero. People would love you, you could make a difference in the world and it'd all just be awesome. The countdown to his adult hood was excruciating, but finally, Zack could join SOLDIER.
Right from the get-go, he showed great aptitude for learning and fighting and though he arrived skinny as a rail, he buffed up soon after his training started. He went quickly from 3rd class to 2nd. Under the tutelage of the famous Angeal Hewley, he learned more in those few months than in his entire career with Shinra (which wasn't more than a year or so at the time). He looked up to Angeal like no other because not only was he a great guy and a great teacher, her was a hero. Zack wanted to be like him immediately. He thought he knew everything from training, and wanted to go out and make a difference!
And all at once; he had to. His mentor was missing and so was another 1st class SOLDIER he idolized. Genesis Rhapsodos was second only to Sephiroth, just because Sephiroth was just a huge act to follow. Zack wanted to be like them all and he worked his butt off seventeen fold to earn his place among them. Though he had unfortunately unfolded some secrets about SOLDIER and Shinra. Somehow, he even got the people he wanted to work with turned against him. If it wasn't for the help of some of the friends he made along the way, he never would have been able to stop Genesis from trying to destroy the world.
He managed to do that, but only after he had, sadly, destroyed his mentor. The man he loved more than his own father; Angeal. It tore him up and shortly after, he had changed his appearance to honor him. He mellowed out, but that spunky kid couldn't really stay down for long. He made friends with one Cloud Strife, and took him under his supposed wing.
Sephiroth went rouge not shortly after that and Zack did his best to defeat him as well. Only it took a turn for the absolute worst. Cloud managed to stop him, but they were both wounded and captured by Shinra. Zack was in and out for a loooonnnnggg time, but he managed to escape with Cloud, who had a mako addiction, and keep Shinra off at bay while he tried to get them both to safety. He, however, met his unfortunate end by facing, like, the entire Shinra force. Just before he died he passed his mentor's sword, The Buster Sword, on to Cloud.
But now he is back!
